The theme of World Environment Day 2013 chosen by the United Nations General Assembly is "Think.Eat.Save". This is a new campaign that UNEP and FAO, along with many other partners, are encouraging people to avoid food waste and choose foods that have less impact on the environment.
International activities to commemorate World Environment Day 2013 will be held in Mongolia, a country transitioning to a green economy.
In Vietnam, World Environment Day 2013 will be celebrated from June 4 - 5 in Hue City. The national flag-raising ceremony in response to World Environment Day is scheduled to take place at Nghinh Luong Pagoda (along the Perfume River) on the morning of June 5. The event will be attended by Party and State leaders, ministries, localities, international organizations, and a large number of people.
“Think - Eat - Save” is the theme of the campaign against food waste, promoting the reduction of excess food and waste. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about one-third of the global food production, equivalent to 1.3 billion tons of food, is lost or wasted each year, while more than 1/7 of the world's population is undernourished and over 20,000 children under 5 die every day from hunger. Our planet is striving to sustain life for 7 billion people. Food waste is a massive source of waste for natural resources and has negative impacts on the environment.
