On May 31, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced that this year's World Environment Day (WED) will focus on reducing food waste, and UNEP has planned a series of global events to raise public awareness.
The focal point of the above series of events is the campaign "Think - Eat - Save - Reduce Your Ecological Footprint".According to a report released in Nairobi, Kenya, by UNEP, the idea behind this campaign is in line with the objectives of WED, and the campaign is spreading the message that every individual and organization can make a difference.Recent figures released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization show that about one-third of the global food production, valued at around $1 trillion, is lost or wasted during production and consumption.Food losses occur mainly during production stages such as harvesting, processing, and distribution, and waste occurs at the retail level or by consumers. The report states that the majority of unconsumed food leads to wasted energy used in production and transportation, but can be reduced through simple measures.UNEP and FAO have joined hands to launch a campaign with the support of the Food Waste Reduction Initiative to reduce food losses and waste throughout the entire production and consumption chain.According to UNEP, hundreds of thousands of people around the world are ready to participate in WED - the largest environmental action day celebrated globally.Among them, the campaign "Think - Eat - Save - Reduce Your Ecological Footprint" was launched in Geneva, Switzerland, urging consumers and retailers to implement innovative measures to significantly reduce food waste at all levels. In Kenya, over 2,000 volunteers will visit supermarkets, restaurants, and hotels with a message calling for a reduction in food waste to have a significant impact on the global hunger situation.
